CGPA to percentage: the formula

There is no single formula: each university or board sets its own, and some changed it between regulations. A percentage turns into CGPA by running the formula backwards: if % = (CGPA − a) × b, then CGPA = % ÷ b + a. The common ones:

Formula 75% is CGPA CGPA 8 is
CGPA × 9.5: CBSE CCE grade sheets, 2010–2017 (also used for SSC) 7.89 76%
(CGPA − 0.5) × 10: JNTUH (R18 and later) 8 75%
(CGPA − 0.75) × 10: JNTUK (R16 to R20) and some others 8.25 72.5%
CGPA × 10 7.5 80%

CGPA to percentage for common CGPAs

CGPA JNTUH (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 JNTUK (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 SSC, CBSE CGPA × 9.5
6 55% 52.5% 57%
6.5 60% 57.5% 61.75%
7 65% 62.5% 66.5%
7.5 70% 67.5% 71.25%
8 75% 72.5% 76%
8.5 80% 77.5% 80.75%
9 85% 82.5% 85.5%
9.5 90% 87.5% 90.25%
10 95% 92.5% 95%

JNTUH CGPA to percentage

For the R18 and later regulations, percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10: a CGPA of 7.5 is 70% and 8 is 75%. For a job or admission, the percentage on JNTUH's conversion certificate is the one that counts.

SSC GPA to percentage (Telangana and Andhra Pradesh)

SSC grade points are usually turned into a percentage as CGPA × 9.5: a GPA of 10 is 95% and 9 is 85.5%. CBSE used the same rule for its Class 10 grade sheets from 2010 to 2017.

Osmania University (OU) and other universities

Universities such as OU set the formula in their own regulations. Choose "Your university's" and type its a and b: for a rule of (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, a is 0.75 and b is 10. Ask your exam branch for the formula if it is not on the memo.

CGPA from semester SGPAs

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × credits of the semester) ÷ Σ credits

Example: SGPA 8 in a 20-credit semester and 7 in a 22-credit one is (160 + 154) ÷ 42 = 7.48; without credits, the plain average is 7.50.

Good to know

  • The percentage on your university's conversion certificate is the one that counts for jobs and admissions; ask your exam cell for it, and quote the formula they use.
  • The CGPA on your memo already weighs semesters by credits: use it as it is.
  • Marks out of a total instead of grades? The percentage calculator turns them into a percentage.
