How income tax is calculated for FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28)

Take the standard deduction, and in the old regime your deductions, off your income; work out the tax on what is left slab by slab; take off the rebate; add any surcharge and 4% cess. In the new regime a salary up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax.

For tax year 2026-27 (1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027) a salary or pension goes through the same steps in both regimes. The new regime has lower rates and a bigger standard deduction, ₹75,000, but allows almost no deductions. The old regime has higher rates and a standard deduction of ₹50,000, and lets you take off HRA, 80C, health insurance, home-loan interest and more.

taxable income = salary − standard deduction − deductions + other income

tax = (slab tax − rebate + surcharge) × 1.04

Example: a salary of ₹15,00,000 with ₹1,50,000 in 80C, ₹25,000 of health insurance and ₹2,400 of professional tax. New regime: ₹14,25,000 taxable, ₹97,500 of tax with cess. Old regime: ₹12,72,600 taxable, ₹2,02,050. The new regime saves ₹1,04,550; on this salary the old one wins only with over ₹5,43,726 of deductions and exemptions in all.

Income tax slabs for FY 2026-27: new and old regime

In the new regime the first ₹4 lakh of taxable income is tax-free and 30% applies above ₹24 lakh. In the old regime, below 60, the first ₹2.5 lakh is tax-free and 30% applies above ₹10 lakh.

Income tax on a ₹10, 15, 20 or 25 lakh salary

In the new regime a ₹15 lakh salary pays ₹97,500 of tax for 2026-27 (₹8,125 a month), and a ₹20 lakh salary ₹1,92,400. The last column is how much the old regime would have to take off (HRA, professional tax, 80C, 80D, home-loan interest, your own NPS) before it cost less; where the new regime's tax is nil, the old one can at best match it.

The table is for a salary below 60 with no other income; enter yours in the calculator above. For the take-home pay from a CTC, after PF and professional tax, see the in-hand salary calculator.

No tax up to ₹12.75 lakh salary: the rebate and marginal relief

A salary up to ₹12,75,000 pays no tax in the new regime: the standard deduction leaves ₹12,00,000, and the rebate cancels the ₹60,000 of tax on it. Just above, marginal relief keeps the tax at no more than the income over ₹12 lakh (plus 4% cess): ₹12,10,000 of taxable income pays ₹10,400, not ₹61,500 plus cess. Taxable income and the tax are rounded to the nearest ₹10.

Old or new tax regime: which is better?

The new regime, unless your deductions and exemptions are large: on a ₹15 lakh salary the old regime costs less only with over ₹5.44 lakh of them. The table above has the figure for other salaries; the calculator works it out with your own HRA, 80C and the rest.

  • The new regime is the default: your employer deducts TDS by it unless you ask for the old one. Professional tax and HRA count only in the old regime; your employer's NPS contribution counts in both.
  • HRA exemption is the least of the HRA you get, the rent less 10% of basic + DA, and 50% of basic + DA in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad (the cities for 2026-27) or 40% elsewhere. The HRA calculator works out yours.
  • Your own NPS takes up to ₹50,000 more off in the old regime (80CCD(1B)), over the ₹1.5 lakh of 80C: see what it grows to in the NPS calculator.

Good to know

  • Above ₹50 lakh a surcharge is added (10%, then 15% above ₹1 crore and 25% above ₹2 crore; 37% above ₹5 crore in the old regime only), with marginal relief at each step, and 4% cess on the lot.
  • A family pension is taxed as other income less a third of it, at most ₹25,000 in the new regime and ₹15,000 in the old; it gets no standard deduction. Your own pension is taxed like a salary.
  • Rent from a house you let out is taxed after the municipal tax, a 30% standard deduction and the interest on its loan, in both regimes. A loss is set off against your other income only in the old regime, up to ₹2 lakh a year with the interest on the home you live in.
  • At 60 or older, the old regime takes up to ₹50,000 of interest on bank, post-office and co-operative deposits off (80TTB).
  • The Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act from 1 April 2026 with new section numbers; the limits stayed the same, and 80C, 80D and the rest still go by their old names.
  • Capital gains on shares, funds and property are taxed at their own rates and are not included here.

Questions

What is the difference between FY 2026-27 and AY 2027-28?

FY 2026-27 is the year you earn the income, 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027; AY 2027-28 is the year after it, in which you file the return for that income. The Income-tax Act, 2025 names it by the year you earn in: tax year 2026-27. So FY 2026-27, AY 2027-28 and tax year 2026-27 all mean the same year's tax, the one this calculator works out.

Can I change my regime every year?

With salary, pension and other non-business income, yes: you pick the regime each year when you file your return, even if your employer deducted TDS by the other one. The old regime can be chosen only in a return filed by the due date (31 July for most salaried people); a late return is taxed in the new regime. With business or professional income, switching is restricted, so check before you choose.

Does it work for AP and Telangana government employees and teachers?

Yes. Enter the gross salary (basic, DA, HRA and allowances) and basic + DA. If you are in the NPS (CPS), enter the government's contribution as the employer's NPS and tick that you work for a government: it comes off in both regimes, up to 14% of basic + DA. A pension is taxed like a salary; a family pension has its own field.

Is professional tax deducted in the new regime?

It is still taken from your salary, but it does not reduce your income tax in the new regime. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana the monthly amount is nil up to ₹15,000 of monthly salary, ₹150 up to ₹20,000, ₹200 above, at most ₹2,400 a year.

Why is my TDS different from this?

Your employer spreads the year's tax over the months left, so a bonus, a pay rise or proofs of investment submitted late change it as the year goes on. What you finally owe is settled when you file your return.
