How to calculate the discount in rupees

Multiply the price by the discount % and divide by 100: that is what you save; the price less that is what you pay. An extra discount comes off the already reduced price:

you pay = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) × (1 − extra ÷ 100)

Example: ₹10,000 at 60% off is ₹4,000; an extra 10% off brings it to ₹3,600. You save ₹6,400: 64% off in all, not 70%.

Discount percentage from two prices

Divide the price you pay by the price before, take it from 1 and multiply by 100: ₹1,499 for a shirt marked ₹2,499 is 40.02% off. Choose "Work out: % off" above.

What "X% + Y% off" really comes to

Offer Total discount You pay on ₹1,000
10% + 10% 19% ₹810
20% + 10% 28% ₹720
40% + 10% 46% ₹540
50% + 10% 55% ₹450
50% + 20% 60% ₹400
60% + 10% 64% ₹360
70% + 10% 73% ₹270

Good to know

  • The MRP already includes GST, and the discount usually comes off the MRP. On a bill that adds GST, work out the discounted price here and the GST on it with the GST calculator.
  • Bank-card offers usually have a cap: "10% instant discount up to ₹1,500" on a ₹59,999 phone is ₹1,500 off, not ₹5,999.90. Type the cap under the extra discount, or choose "₹ off" for a coupon of a fixed amount: ₹200 off a ₹2,000 item already 20% off leaves ₹1,400.
  • Compare what you pay, not the percent: 50% off ₹4,000 (₹2,000) is cheaper than 60% off ₹6,000 (₹2,400).

Questions

Is 50% + 20% off the same as 70% off?

No. The 20% comes off the price already halved, so you pay 0.5 × 0.8 = 40% of the price: 60% off in all.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide by what is left after the discount: ₹1,800 after 40% off was ₹1,800 ÷ 0.6 = ₹3,000. Choose "Work out: Original price" above.
