How the NPS corpus and pension are calculated
Each monthly contribution is invested and grows at the expected return, compounded monthly, until you exit at 60. For a contribution P at the start of each month:
Corpus = P × ((1 + i) n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i)
i is the monthly return (yearly return ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n the months to 60; with a yearly increase, each year's contributions are added the same way. At 60 part of the corpus can be taken as cash and the rest buys an annuity, a pension for life:
Pension a month = amount annuitised × annuity rate ÷ 12
Example: starting at 30 with ₹5,000 a month, raised 5% a year, at 10% you put in ₹39,86,331 and have ₹1,79,65,105 at 60. A non-government subscriber can take ₹1,43,72,084 (80%) and annuitise ₹35,93,021, which at 6% pays ₹17,965 a month. Of that lump sum, ₹1,07,79,063 (60% of the corpus) is tax-free and ₹35,93,021 is taxed at your slab. A government subscriber takes ₹1,07,79,063, all of it tax-free, and gets ₹35,930 a month.
NPS calculator for government employees
Choose "Government" under "You are": a central or state government employee in NPS can take up to 60% of the corpus at 60 as a lump sum, all of it tax-free, and at least 40% buys the pension. Enter your contribution and the government's together as the monthly contribution (for central government staff, 10% of basic + DA from you and 14% from the government).
Private and corporate employees, and anyone who joined on their own, choose "Non-government": up to 80% as a lump sum, with the part above 60% of the corpus taxed at your slab.
NPS pension from ₹5,000 a month
Starting at 30 with ₹5,000 a month, raised 5% a year, the corpus at 60 is about ₹1,79,65,105 and the pension ₹17,965 a month for a non-government subscriber, ₹35,930 for a government one, who annuitises more.
| Start at | You put in | Corpus at 60 | Pension a month, non-government | Pension a month, government |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | ₹54,19,218 | ₹3,14,04,875 | ₹31,405 | ₹62,810 |
| 30 | ₹39,86,331 | ₹1,79,65,105 | ₹17,965 | ₹35,930 |
| 35 | ₹28,63,626 | ₹1,00,39,541 | ₹10,040 | ₹20,079 |
| 40 | ₹19,83,957 | ₹54,12,850 | ₹5,413 | ₹10,826 |
At 10% a year and a 6% annuity, with the most taken as a lump sum: both are assumptions, so change them above.
NPS withdrawal rules at 60 (from December 2025)
| Corpus | Non-government | Government |
|---|---|---|
| Above ₹12 lakh | Up to 80% as cash, at least 20% annuity | Up to 60% as cash, at least 40% annuity |
| ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh | The split above, or up to ₹6 lakh as cash and the rest drawn over at least 6 years or annuitised | |
| ₹8 lakh or less | All of it as cash, at once or in instalments (or the split above) | |
From PFRDA's amendments to its exit and withdrawal regulations, notified in December 2025. Government means central and state government employees in NPS; everyone else, including corporate NPS, is non-government.
Good to know
- NPS returns are market-linked: the funds hold shares, corporate bonds and government bonds in the mix you choose, so 10% is an assumption, not a promise.
- Annuity rates depend on the insurer, your age and the plan: one that returns the purchase price to your family pays less than a pension for life alone.
- Tax: 60% of the corpus taken at exit is tax-free, so a government subscriber's lump sum is tax-free. A non-government subscriber who takes more (up to 80%) pays tax at their slab on the part above 60%: the tax law was not changed when PFRDA raised the limit. What buys the annuity is not taxed, but the pension it pays is taxed as income every year.
- You need not exit at 60: you can stay invested, and defer the lump sum or the annuity.
Questions
Can I take money out before 60?
Up to 25% of your own contributions, for purposes such as a house, your children's education or marriage, or medical treatment: up to four times before 60, four years apart. Leaving NPS altogether before 60 means at least 80% must buy an annuity (all of it can be withdrawn if the corpus is ₹5 lakh or less).
Why is the pension so small next to the corpus?
Only the annuitised part pays a pension, and an annuity pays a fixed amount for life, with no increase for inflation. The lump sum is yours to invest; an SWP from a mutual fund is one way to draw it as income (the SWP calculator shows how long it lasts).
NPS or EPF?
Salaried employees usually have both. EPF pays a declared rate and an EPS pension; NPS is market-linked. See what your PF adds up to with the EPF calculator.
