How lumpsum returns are calculated
A one-time investment compounds once a year at the expected return:
Value = P × (1 + r) T
Example: ₹1,00,000 invested once at 12% for 10 years becomes an estimated ₹3,10,585 : more than three times the money.
What ₹1 lakh invested once grows to in 5 to 25 years
At 12% a year, ₹1,00,000 becomes about ₹3,10,585 in 10 years and ₹9,64,629 in 20. Ten times the amount grows to ten times as much: ₹10,00,000 becomes about ₹96,46,293 in 20 years.
| After | At 8% a year | At 10% a year | At 12% a year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 years | ₹1,46,933 | ₹1,61,051 | ₹1,76,234 |
| 10 years | ₹2,15,892 | ₹2,59,374 | ₹3,10,585 |
| 15 years | ₹3,17,217 | ₹4,17,725 | ₹5,47,357 |
| 20 years | ₹4,66,096 | ₹6,72,750 | ₹9,64,629 |
| 25 years | ₹6,84,848 | ₹10,83,471 | ₹17,00,006 |
Good to know
- Rule of 72: divide 72 by the yearly return to see roughly how many years money takes to double (6 years at 12%).
- Returns of market-linked funds are not guaranteed; this is a projection at a constant rate.
- Have a target instead? Choose "Amount needed" to see what you must invest today. To draw a monthly income from the sum later, see the SWP calculator.
Tax on the gains
- Equity funds (at least 65% in Indian shares): gains on units held up to 12 months are taxed at 20%; after that, 12.5% on your total long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a year, plus 4% cess.
- Debt funds bought from April 2023: gains are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.
Example: the ₹2,10,585 gain above, from an equity fund sold after 10 years, pays ₹11,126 tax (12.5% of ₹85,585, plus cess) if it is your only long-term gain that year, leaving ₹2,99,459.
Questions
Lumpsum or SIP: which is better?
A lumpsum puts all the money to work at once; an SIP spreads it over time, which smooths out market ups and downs. Compare both with the SIP calculator.
What will it be worth after inflation?
The value here is in future rupees. To see what it buys in today's money, use the inflation calculator's "Future cost" at, say, 6% a year.
