How to calculate mileage (km per litre)

Divide the distance by the fuel it took. The fuel cost per km is the price of a litre divided by the mileage.

Mileage = distance ÷ fuel used  ·  Cost per km = price ÷ mileage

Example: 300 km on 20 litres is 15 km per litre. At ₹116.15 a litre (petrol in Hyderabad on 29 October 2026), each km costs ₹7.74, so 1,000 km a month is ₹7,743 ( 66.7 litres) and ₹92,920 a year.

Petrol cost for a trip

Divide the distance by your mileage for the litres, and multiply by the price: 300 km on a bike that gives 45 km a litre takes 6.7 litres, ₹774 at ₹116.15. For your own vehicle, the calculator above shows the fuel and cost for trips of 50 to 2,000 km at your mileage.

Measure it yourself (tank to tank)

• Fill the tank to full and note the odometer reading (or reset the trip meter).
• Drive as you usually do, for at least 100–200 km.
• Fill to full again at the same pump: the litres it takes are the fuel you used for that distance.

Filled with a round amount (₹500, ₹1,000)?

The litres are the rupees ÷ the price a litre: choose "Rupees (₹)" above and type what you paid. To measure, fill when the reserve light comes on, note the odometer, and ride until it comes on again; if you filled more than once in between, add the amounts up.

Example: ₹500 at ₹116.15 a litre is 4.3 litres; if it took you 190 km, the mileage is 44.1 km per litre.

Good to know

• The company's figure (ARAI, or the range of an EV) is measured on a test cycle; city traffic, the AC, tyre pressure and load usually give 10% to 25% less.
• Compare vehicles on the cost per km, not the mileage: an electric car that runs 300 km on 45 units at ₹8 a unit (charged at home) costs ₹1.2 a km, against ₹7.74 for the petrol car in the example above. An electric scooter takes about 10 units for 300 km, against 6 or 7 litres of petrol for a scooter.
