| 15% of 2,000 | 300 |

Percentage formula
A percent is a part of 100. The three everyday questions:
X% of Y = X × Y ÷ 100 · X as a % of Y = X ÷Y × 100 · % change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100
Examples: 15% of 2,000 is 300. 450 marks out of 600 is 75%. A salary going from ₹40,000 to ₹50,000 is a rise of 25%.
How to calculate the percentage of marks
Divide the marks you got by the total and multiply by 100: 520 out of 600 is 520 ÷ 600 × 100 = 86.67%. Choose "X is what % of Y" above. The marks needed for a percentage:
| Total marks | 35% | 60% | 75% | 90% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 35 | 60 | 75 | 90 |
| 500 | 175 | 300 | 375 | 450 |
| 600 | 210 | 360 | 450 | 540 |
| 1,000 | 350 | 600 | 750 | 900 |

Percentage between two numbers
What percent 30 is of 120: 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%. The same works for attendance: 68 days present out of 90 working days is 75.56%.
Percentage increase and decrease (a salary hike)
Take the old value from the new, divide by the old and multiply by 100. A salary from ₹42,000 to ₹46,200 is a hike of 10%; a price from ₹250 to ₹200 falls 20%. Choose "Increase / decrease" above.
Profit or loss works the same way on the cost: bought at ₹800 and sold at ₹1,000 is a profit of 25%.
Good to know
- X% of Y is the same as Y% of X: 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4. Handy for working it out in your head.
- For GST, use the GST calculator; for "40% + 10% off", the discount calculator.
Questions
A 25% rise and then a 25% fall: am I back where I started?
No. ₹40,000 up 25% is ₹50,000, and 25% off that is ₹37,500. The way back from ₹50,000 to ₹40,000 is a fall of 20%, because the fall is counted on the bigger number.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?
An interest rate going from 8% to 10% rises by 2 percentage points, but by 25% of itself. When a report says a rate "rose 2%", check which it means: usually the points.
