Only about 1 baby in 25 arrives on the due date itself; most come in the two weeks either side. Your doctor may move the date after the first scan, which is more exact than counting from a period: then count from that due date here.
How the due date is calculated
By Naegele's rule, which doctors use everywhere: 40 weeks from the first day of the last period (LMP), moved for a longer or shorter cycle.
due date = first day of last period + 280 days + (cycle length − 28) days
Example: a period that started on Thursday, 1 January 2026 gives a due date of Thursday, 8 October 2026. With a 30-day cycle it is two days later, Saturday, 10 October 2026.
Due date from conception or IVF transfer
From conception, the due date is 266 days (38 weeks) later. After IVF, count from the transfer date, the way ACOG dates IVF pregnancies: 261 days for a day-5 embryo (blastocyst) or 263 for a day-3 one, fresh or frozen.
- A day-5 transfer on Monday, 2 March 2026 gives a due date of Wednesday, 18 November 2026.
- A due date from your scan or doctor: pick it, and the weeks, trimester and scan dates are counted from it.

The weeks are counted from the first day of the last period. From a period that started on Thursday, 1 January 2026:

How many months pregnant am I?
Doctors count pregnancy in weeks, not months: 40 weeks from the first day of the last period is about 9 months, 7 days on the calendar. Trimesters: the first runs to 13 weeks 6 days, the second to 27 weeks 6 days, the third from 28 weeks to birth.
Good to know
- The weeks are counted from the period (moved by the cycle's difference from 28 days), about two weeks before the baby is conceived: at "4 weeks" the baby is about 2 weeks old. With a cycle other than 28 days, the page also gives the weeks from the period date alone, as some antenatal cards count them.
- The first scan measures the baby and gives a more exact date; if your doctor changes the date, go by the doctor.

Questions
Why count from the period and not from conception?
The first day of a period is a date most women know; the day of conception usually is not. So every pregnancy is counted the same way.
Can I find the due date without the period date?
Yes: count from the date of conception, an IVF transfer or the due date from your scan. Pick it under "Count from".
My cycles are irregular. Is the date still right?
Less so: with irregular cycles the period date says little about when ovulation happened. An early scan is the better guide.
