The target is before tax, due on the gains when you sell: aim a little higher. Equity funds (at least 65% in Indian shares): gains on units held up to 12 months are taxed at 20%; after that, 12.5% on your total long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a year, plus 4% cess. Debt funds bought from April 2023: gains are added to your income and taxed at your slab rate.

How much SIP you need for a goal

The calculator runs an SIP backwards. With a target T, a monthly rate i (yearly return ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n monthly instalments, each paid at the start of the month:

SIP = T ÷ [((1 + i) n − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i)]

Example: to have ₹1,00,00,000 at 60, starting at 30 and expecting 12% a year, invest ₹2,833 a month for 30 years. You put in ₹10,19,855; returns make up the other ₹89,80,145. Or invest ₹2,78,167 once, today.

SIP for ₹1 crore in 5, 10, 15 or 20 years

At 12% a year, ₹1 crore in 10 years needs ₹43,041 a month; in 15 years, ₹19,819; in 20 years, ₹10,009. The sooner you start, the less you put in yourself.

In SIP a month First SIP, raised 10% a year Or once, today
5 years ₹1,21,232 ₹1,01,567 ₹55,04,496
7 years ₹75,770 ₹58,496 ₹43,35,155
10 years ₹43,041 ₹29,636 ₹30,29,948
15 years ₹19,819 ₹11,516 ₹16,67,834
20 years ₹10,009 ₹5,028 ₹9,18,058
25 years ₹5,270 ₹2,339 ₹5,05,345
30 years ₹2,833 ₹1,132 ₹2,78,167

For ₹1 crore at 60, count the years from your age now: 30 years from 30, 20 from 40. Any other target scales in proportion: ₹50 lakh needs half the SIP.

Good to know

  • A yearly step-up lowers the start: raising the SIP by 10% every year, ₹1,132 a month is enough to begin with for the same ₹1,00,00,000 in 30 years.
  • Money loses value: at 6% inflation, ₹1,00,00,000 in 30 years buys what ₹17,41,101 buys today. For a goal in today's money, raise the target (the inflation calculator works it out).
  • The return is an assumption. Market-linked funds go up and down; a lower rate (8% or 10%) gives a safer estimate, and moving to safer investments in the last few years protects what you have built.
  • The target is before tax, due on the gains when you sell. In an equity fund, gains on units held over 12 months are taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year, plus 4% cess (20% within 12 months); a debt fund's are taxed at your slab rate. Aim a little above what you need.

Questions

How do I plan a goal with inflation?

Put the goal in future money first: what costs ₹50,00,000 today will cost about ₹1,60,35,677 in 20 years at 6% inflation (the inflation calculator's "Future cost"). Enter that as the amount you want.

Why is the one-time amount less than the lumpsum calculator says?

Here every rupee grows the same way: the SIP, the one-time amount and what you have already saved all earn the yearly return ÷ 12 every month, so 12% works out to 12.68% a year. The lumpsum calculator adds 12% once a year; enter 12.68% there to get about the same answer.

What if I have already saved something?

Enter it under "Already saved": it grows at the same return until the goal, and the SIP only makes up the rest. If it grows past the target on its own, no SIP is needed.
