Once a bill is not paid in full, cards charge interest on the whole bill from each purchase date, not only on what is left after the due date: the real interest is higher than shown here.

Last updated : an example card rate of 3.6% a month and 18% GST on interest. Check the rate and the minimum due on your card statement.

How is credit card interest calculated?

If the bill is not paid in full by the due date, the bank charges interest on what you carry at a monthly rate (3.5% to 3.75% a month on most cards, 42% to 45% a year) and 18% GST on that interest: at 3.6% a month, ₹2,124 on a ₹50,000 bill for one month. With a monthly rate r (÷ 100), each month:

next bill = (bill − payment) × (1 + r × 1.18)

To clear the bill in n equal payments, the first one now, with v = 1 ÷ (1 + r × 1.18):

payment = bill × (1 − v) ÷ (1 − v n )

Example: a ₹50,000 bill at 3.6% a month. Paying only the minimum due (HDFC Bank's rule) takes 16 years 6 months and costs ₹1,21,326 in interest and GST. Paying ₹5,000 a month clears it in 1 year 1 month for ₹12,929; ₹5,184 a month clears it in a year.

Credit card interest per month on ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh

At 3.6% a month plus GST (4.25% a month in all), with no new spending:

Bill carried Interest + GST for a month Paying only the minimum due To clear it in a year, pay a month
₹10,000 ₹425 8 years 1 month, ₹19,159 ₹1,037
₹25,000 ₹1,062 12 years 10 months, ₹57,471 ₹2,592
₹50,000 ₹2,124 16 years 6 months, ₹1,21,326 ₹5,184
₹1,00,000 ₹4,248 20 years 1 month, ₹2,49,034 ₹10,369

Credit card interest after the due date

From the due date, on whatever is left unpaid, every month until it is cleared: 3.6% a month is 43.2% a year before GST. Pay the full bill by the due date and there is no interest at all; pay even a little less and, on most cards, interest runs on the whole bill from each purchase date (see the last question below).

What is the minimum amount due, and why does it take so long?

Cards work the minimum due out differently, and the statement shows it. HDFC Bank asks for the GST and fees in full plus 5% of the rest (since June 2025); SBI Card for the interest, GST and fees in full plus 2% of the rest (since 15 July 2025); the older rule, still on some cards, is 5% of the whole bill. All ask for at least ₹200. With interest and GST at about 4.25% a month, only a sliver of each payment reduces what you owe, and the minimum shrinks as the bill does. On the example bill, the minimum alone takes 16 years 6 months on HDFC's rule, 13 years 8 months on SBI Card's and 25 years 2 months on the older rule. Paying it keeps the card in good standing, with no late fee, but it is the most expensive way to repay.

Ways to get out sooner

  • Stop using the card until it is cleared: while a bill is unpaid, new purchases get no interest-free days.
  • Ask the bank to convert the bill to EMIs: card EMIs often cost about 13% to 24% a year (plus a processing fee and GST), far less than 42% to 45%.
  • A personal loan, or a balance transfer to a card with a lower rate, can also cost less. Compare the total with the personal loan EMI calculator.
  • Pay something extra whenever you can: every rupee above the minimum goes straight off what you owe.

Questions

What does 3.6% a month come to in a year?

43.2% a year, and with 18% GST on the interest, 51% a year added to what you carry, before any compounding: far above a personal loan's rate.

What happens if I pay less than the minimum due?

The bank adds a late payment fee (with GST) and reports the missed payment to credit bureaus, which lowers your CIBIL score and makes loans harder to get.

Why is my real bill a little higher than this?

Once a bill is not paid in full, most cards charge interest from each purchase date rather than from the due date, and add fees. This calculator assumes no new spending and no fees, so treat it as the least it will cost.
