How to use the scientific calculator

Type the whole expression, then =. It follows the usual order of operations (BODMAS):

brackets → functions, ! and % → powers → × and ÷ → + and −

  • Powers go right to left: 2^3^2 = 2^9 = 512. And −2² = −4, because the power comes first; (−2)² = 4.
  • A number next to a bracket, π or a function multiplies: 2π, 3(4 + 5), 2sin(30). As on scientific calculators, that comes before × and ÷: 1 ÷ 2π is 1 ÷ (2π) = 0.159154943092.
  • INV turns sin, cos and tan into sin⁻¹, cos⁻¹ and tan⁻¹, ln into eˣ and log into 10ˣ.

Examples (degrees): sin 30° = 0.5 · cos⁻¹ 0.5 = 60 · log 1000 = 3 · ln e² = 2 · √2 = 1.41421356237 · 5! = 120 · 2¹⁰ = 1,024

sin, cos and tan in degrees or radians

DEG / RAD sets the angle unit: sin 30 = 0.5 in degrees, and sin(π ÷ 6) = 0.5 in radians. Check it before an exam sum: sin 30 in radians is -0.988031624093.

Angle sin cos tan
0° 0 1 0
30° 0.5 0.866025403784 0.57735026919
45° 0.707106781187 0.707106781187 1
60° 0.866025403784 0.5 1.73205080757
90° 1 0 no value

log and ln: base 10, base e and base 2

log is base 10 (log 1000 = 3) and ln base e (ln e = 1). For any other base, divide two logs: log base 2 of 8 is log(8) ÷ log(2) = 3.

Questions

Why is tan 90° an error?

tan 90° = sin 90° ÷ cos 90° = 1 ÷ 0, which has no value. The same goes for log 0 or the square root of a negative number.

How many digits does it show?

Twelve significant digits with Indian grouping (12,34,567.891), so 0.1 + 0.2 shows 0.3. Very large and very small answers use powers of ten: 1.5e+20 is 1.5 × 10²⁰.

Can I use it for engineering and Intermediate maths?

For sums with trigonometry, logs, powers, roots and factorials, yes, in degrees or radians. It does not solve equations or work with matrices.
