How to make passport size photos to print

  1. Choose the photo size: passport size (3.5 × 4.5 cm) is what most Indian forms mean.
  2. Choose the paper: 4 × 6 in photo paper gives a JPG for any photo shop or kiosk; A4 paper gives a PDF for your own printer.
  3. Choose your photo and tap Auto-frame: your head is placed in the oval, at the size the photo wants, and straightened if it leans. Or drag it there yourself and zoom with two fingers or the slider.
  4. Look at the photo check under the picture, then download, print, and cut along the grey lines.

Every photo on the sheet is the same, at 300 dots an inch, the resolution photo printers use. If a form wants your name and the date the photo was taken under it, tick the box and type them. Auto fix balances dull light; under Background the phone can put white behind you. Auto-frame and Background use tools the phone downloads the first time (about 4 MB, from jsDelivr and Google); your photo is never sent. Everything happens in your browser, and the photo is gone when you close the page.

The photo check

Before you print, the tool looks at the photo the way an office would: is it sharp, is the background plain and light, does it have enough pixels for a sharp print; and after Auto-frame, is your head the right size, centred and straight, with even light on both sides of your face. A green tick passes; an amber one says what to do. It is a guide, not the office's own check: the rules of the form you are applying for come first.

Sizes, and how many fit

Photo Size On 4 × 6 in photo paperOn A4 paper
Passport size 3.5 × 4.5 cm 830
Stamp size 2 × 2.5 cm 2084
PAN card 2.5 × 3.5 cm 1250
US visa 5.1 × 5.1 cm 215

If your form gives another size, choose Custom size and type it in millimetres (1 cm is 10 mm).

For a photo that is accepted

  • A recent photo, facing the camera straight, with both ears and the top of your shoulders in the picture.
  • A plain white or light background: stand a step in front of a white wall, so no shadow falls on it.
  • Even light on your face (daylight from a window works well), eyes open, mouth closed.
  • No cap or dark glasses unless your form allows them; religious headwear is usually allowed with the face fully visible.
  • Many offices refuse edited photos: change the background or the light only where your form allows it. A photo taken right is always safest.

Printing

  • At a photo shop or kiosk: ask for a 4 × 6 inch (10 × 15 cm, also called 4R) print of the JPG, without resizing or cropping. It costs a few rupees.
  • On your own printer: open the PDF and print at actual size (100%), not "Fit to page", on photo paper or thick white paper. Then measure the line beside the photos: it should be exactly 5 cm. If it is shorter, the printer shrank the page.

Questions

What is the passport size photo size in India?

3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm tall (35 × 45 mm), with the face taking up most of the height. It is what most Indian forms, exam halls and offices mean by "passport size". Some forms ask for stamp size (about 2 × 2.5 cm), and a US visa for 2 × 2 inches: both are in the list.

Why did my photos print smaller or bigger?

The printer scaled the page. Print the PDF at actual size (100%); at a shop, ask for the JPG to be printed as it is on 4 × 6 paper, without fitting or cropping.

I also need the photo for an online form. Can I get just one?

Yes: under the download button, Download one photo (JPG) gives the single photo. If the online form has a size limit in KB, the Photo & Signature Resizer makes it fit.

Can I put more than one person on a sheet?

No: one sheet is one photo, repeated. Make a sheet for each person.

Is my photo uploaded or stored?

No. The sheet is made in your browser and the photo is never sent to ap7am or anywhere else. Only if you tap Auto-frame or choose a new background does the phone download the face finder or the cut-out tool once (from jsDelivr and Google); the photo still stays on your phone.
