How to type in Telugu online

Type Telugu words in English letters, the way you write them in a message, and the box above turns them into Telugu script as you type: no Telugu keyboard and no app needed. There are two ways, switched above the box:

  • Guess words (the first time you come): type as you would in a message, roju, namaskaram, telangana, and the common Telugu word is chosen for you, as on a phone keyboard. If it picks the wrong one, tap the right one in the suggestions under the box; next time that word comes first.
  • Exact letters: every letter as the chart below says, nothing guessed. Best for names, and for words the suggestions do not know.

The chart for exact letters:

Type each sound in English letters. A long vowel is the letter twice or a capital (aa or A for ఆ), and a consonant with no vowel after it joins the next one ( kk → క్క). Capitals matter: t is త but T is ట. That is the whole scheme; the chart has every letter.

Signs

  • M ం: Sunna (anusvara)
  • H ః: Visarga
  • _ ్: Ends a letter with ్ (pollu) (raam_ → రామ్)
  • {WhatsApp}: words in braces stay in English ({WhatsApp} lO → WhatsApp లో)

Telugu style sunna (సున్నా)

Telugu writes a sunna (ం) where English spelling has m or n, so the box does too (the tick box above turns it off):

  • m or n before another consonant: manchi → మంచి,sankraanti → సంక్రాంతి. The pairs Telugu keeps stay as they are: amma → అమ్మ, janma → జన్మ, ramya → రమ్య.
  • m at the end of a word: pustakam → పుస్తకం. For మ్ at the end, type m_.
  • M is always ం: saMyukta → సంయుక్త.

Questions

Why did "Telugu" come out as టెలుగు?

A capital T is ట. The box turns off your phone's automatic capitals, but a capital typed by hand still counts: type telugu. Capital N, L, M and H at the start of a word are read as small letters, because ణ, ళ, ం, ః never start a Telugu word.

How does "Guess words" know which word I mean?

It reads your letters loosely, as people type Telugu in messages: t, th and T can be త, థ, ట, a vowel can be short or long, m or n can be a sunna. Of the Telugu words that fit, it shows the most common ones first, preferring those closest to what you typed. It has learnt from ap7am's own Telugu news: the common words, the names and places in the news, and how Telugu is spelt, so it can write words it has never seen whole, the way they join in speech: vachcindevarante is వచ్చిందెవరంటే, ekkadanundi is ఎక్కడి నుండి. English words typed in English come out as Telugu writes them (school is స్కూల్), names too (delhi is ఢిల్లీ), and abbreviations as they are said (kcr is కేసీఆర్). In a test on sentences typed by real people, which it had never seen, it chose the right word 79 times in 100, and the right word was among the first three suggestions 86 times in 100.

Is it the same as Google's Telugu keyboard?

It works the same way, with one difference: Google's keyboard sends what you type to Google to guess it, while this page guesses on your phone. For a word it does not know, the letters as typed are always among the suggestions, and Exact letters spells anything: rOju is రోజు.

Can I speak instead of typing?

Yes, in Chrome (on Android and computers) and Safari: tap the microphone in the box and speak in Telugu; what you say is written in Telugu letters where the cursor is, and you can mix it with typed words. Tap the microphone again to stop. Speech is turned into text by your browser's own service, not by ap7am: Chrome sends it to Google and Safari to Apple. ap7am does not receive or keep your voice, and the microphone is used only while it is red. Firefox has no voice typing, so there is no microphone there.

Do I need a Telugu keyboard or an app?

No. This page works in the browser of any phone or computer, with the keyboard you already have: type in English letters and copy the Telugu. There is nothing to install and no sign-up.

Can I paste it into WhatsApp, Facebook or Word?

Yes. It is ordinary Telugu text (Unicode), the same as from a Telugu keyboard: it pastes into any app or document and shows on any phone.

Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

Your text is not sent anywhere: the Telugu is worked out on your phone. Your text and the suggestions you picked are kept only in this browser, so they are still there if you reload; the × in the box clears the text. One thing is sent, and only if you leave Share my corrections ticked: when you tap a suggestion to correct a word, the English letters and the Telugu word you chose go to ap7am, nothing else and nothing about you. Editors check them, and the ones many readers make improve the suggestions for everyone. If you use voice typing, your speech goes to your browser's speech service (Google or Apple) to be written down, not to ap7am.

The suggestions are learnt from ap7am's Telugu news and from IndicCorp v2 (AI4Bharat, IIT Madras; CC0). English words come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary, © 1993–2015 Carnegie Mellon University; names of people and places from Wikidata (CC0).

Worked out on your device: what you type is not sent anywhere. Only the corrections you choose to share are sent (the English letters and the Telugu word you picked, nothing about you). Voice typing, if you use it, is done by your browser’s speech service (Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari); ap7am does not receive your voice.
