Thaai Kizhavi Movie Review

Thaai Kizhavi is a rural drama directed by Sivakumar Murugesan, with Radikaa Sarathkumar playing the lead role. Produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Sivakarthikeyan, the film gained attention for its strong content and impressive box office performance despite a modest budget. Now streaming on Jio Hotstar in multiple languages, the film blends emotion, satire, and social commentary.

Plot Summary

The story is set in a remote village in Kondavala. Pavunuthayi (Radikaa Sarathkumar) lives with her daughter Suruli (Rachel) and grandson Raju. Suruli stays with her mother due to disputes with her husband over three sovereigns of gold. Pavunuthayi also has three sons who left home four years ago after conflicts over property.

Pavunuthayi runs a strict money-lending business and is feared by villagers for her harsh interest collection. One day, she suffers a paralytic stroke, losing her ability to move and speak. Villagers, relieved from her dominance, celebrate, while her sons and daughters-in-law return, hoping to claim her assets.

As they wait for her death, a new twist emerges when a gold shop owner reveals that Pavunuthayi had taken 160 sovereigns of gold from him. The family realizes she is trying to reveal its hiding place. What follows is a tense and darkly humorous struggle over greed, survival, and relationships.

Analysis

The film effectively portrays how money influences human relationships and societal values. It highlights how even basic human emotions become secondary when wealth is involved. The narrative revolves around the idea that a person’s worth is often judged by their financial status.

Director Sivakumar Murugesan presents this theme in an engaging and entertaining manner, balancing seriousness with subtle humor. The screenplay flows naturally, and each scene reflects real-life situations, making the story relatable and impactful.

Performances

Radikaa Sarathkumar delivers a powerful performance as Pavunuthayi. Her body language, expressions, and dialogue delivery carry the film from start to finish. Her portrayal of a strong yet vulnerable woman stands out as the biggest highlight.

The actors playing her sons add a layer of dark comedy through their weaknesses and selfish motives. Supporting characters are well-written and contribute effectively to the narrative without feeling unnecessary.

Technical Aspects

The director’s character design and storytelling approach are commendable. Cinematography by Vivek Vijay Kumar captures the rural setting with authenticity, enhancing the film’s realism. Nivas K Prasanna’s background score elevates emotional moments, while San Lokesh’s editing keeps the narrative crisp and engaging. Real locations further add to the film’s natural feel.

Final Verdict

Thaai Kizhavi Movie presents a strong message about the changing nature of relationships in a money-driven world. While it acknowledges the importance of money, it also warns against losing humanity in its pursuit. With a mix of emotion, satire, and engaging storytelling, this film is worth watching with family.
