An 83-year-old Japanese explorer successfully completed his solo, nonstop sail across the Pacific on Saturday, becoming the oldest person to do it. Kenichi Horie arrived in the Kii Strait off Japan's western coast, having completed his trans-Pacific journey in 69 days after departing from a yacht dock in San Francisco in March. His success came after three days of battling the force of a powerful tidal. According to his sponsors, Horie's return to Japan makes him the world's oldest individual to complete a solo, nonstop crossing of the Pacific. Horie has previously completed a number of other long-distance solo expeditions, including a circumnavigation of the globe in 1974.
