Andhra's Ruling YSR Congress Wants to Join Freebies case in Supreme Court
Recently, the YSRCP, which is in power in Andhra Pradesh, filed an affidavit with the Supreme Court requesting to be included as a party to the writ action that seeks to outlaw political parties from announcing giveaways during an election campaign.
The Supreme Court has received an affidavit from AP's YSR Congress party asking to participate in the proceedings in the matter involving the distribution of freebies. The petition said that it is the duty of an elected government to put policies in place that will reduce poverty and provide people with better access to healthcare, education, and work opportunities. The YSR Congress noted that even while such an expenditure is frequently categorised as a revenue expenditure, it has a long-term influence on the formation of assets and an improvement in quality of life.
The YSRCP is the fourth party, following the AAP, DMK, and the Congress, to petition the Supreme Court to join the argument against allowing political parties to make freebie promises during election campaigns.
