112 is India’s emergency number

Hyderabad, July 8: India will soon introduce 112 as national emergency number on the lines of 911 in USA. Sources quoting Union government said that the toll-free emergency number will initially give top priority to address problems of women and latter it would cater to police, ambulance, fire and other services. Similarly, a button service would be introduced for all public transport vehicles across the country. A control room in Delhi will receive all the calls to 112 emergency number and direct them to concerned cities. In all 4,000 employees will work round the clock to receive the calls. The officials are estimating that the emergency toll-free number would receive 10 lakh calls every day. The calls can be made from landlines, mobiles, internet and mobile apps. The existing emergency numbers like 100, 102, 101 and 108 will be subsumed into 112. The telecom and internet service providers are asked to integrate their networks with the system to know about the exact location of the caller.
