Supreme Court of India Recognizes Homemakers as \'Nation Builders\', Mandates Minimum ₹30,000 Notional Income for Compensation
In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court of India has granted legal and financial recognition to the invaluable unpaid services of homemakers. The Court described homemakers as "nation builders" for their contributions in managing households, raising children, and supporting families.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh ruled that in motor vehicle accident cases, the notional monthly income of a homemaker should be considered at least ₹30,000 for calculating compensation payable to their dependents. This amount is in addition to the guidelines laid down in the Pranay Sethi case. Even if the homemaker had other sources of income, this ₹30,000 can be added as a separate head of compensation.

The Court further directed that this minimum notional income should be increased by 10% every three years to account for inflation. It emphasized that domestic work, childcare, and family care form the backbone of society and the national economy, and that these services should not be undervalued merely because they are unpaid. The judgment described the historical devaluation of such work as a "historical wrong" that needs correction. Background of the Case

The ruling came on an appeal stemming from a 2001 road accident in Punjab in which a woman named Reshma died. Her husband and children had been fighting for over two decades for adequate compensation. The Supreme Court applied the new principles and significantly enhanced the compensation awarded to the family.

This judgment is expected to have a far-reaching impact on thousands of motor accident compensation cases across India. The Court also clarified that the principle applies not only to women but also to male homemakers. It additionally directed that motor accident claims should be resolved within one year and asked High Court Chief Justices to take administrative steps for faster disposal.
