Govt revokes licences of 13,000 NGOs in two months

Delhi, June 13: The Union Government has cancelled licences of 13,000 NGOs (Non-governmental organizations) in the country over the past two months for violation of rules governing foreign funds. The government has initiated action against the NGOs as they have violated norms and failed to submit annual returns. Some of the NGOs even supported anti-government protests. Of the 20 lakh NGOs in the country, only 2 lakh organisations file their annual returns. The government has accused some NGOs of interfering in the country’s internal matters. Civil society activists are voicing concerns over the crackdown. According to them, some NGOs are empowering marginalised.
