The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, taking issue with her recent remarks on Karnataka's sovereignty. In a memorandum submitted by a BJP delegation led by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, the party called for the de-recognition of Congress, accusing them of using divisive language in their election campaign. The BJP argued that Sonia Gandhi's comments on Karnataka's sovereignty could incite separatist sentiments. She made the controversial statement at a public rally in Hubballi-Dharwad on May 7, which was subsequently posted on Twitter. The BJP denounced her remarks as an affront to the memory of freedom fighters from Karnataka who fought for India's independence and to the patriotic Kannadigas who take pride in their Indian identity. As part of their complaint to the Election Commission, the BJP provided a copy of the Congress party's tweet that contained Sonia Gandhi's contentious statement.
