Can Rishi Sunaks rise in India?- Jayaprakash Narayan
Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan, the founder of Lok Satta, applauds Rishi Sunak's appointment as the first British Prime Minister of colour. Every Indian, no matter where they are, should be proud and happy, according to him. However, he makes the point that while people of Indian descent live prosperous lives abroad, we rarely see excellence recognised in Indian public life.
To enable a person who is similarly young, capable, and public-spirited to rise in politics in the nation, a few systemic changes are required. These include real party internal democracy, which ensures that competence prevails, lessening the influence of money in politics, and strong and efficient local governments, which allow young leaders to emerge and demonstrate their calibre.
