The Gujarat government's decision to award remission to the 11 defendants in the 2002 Bilkis Bano gang rape case is being challenged in court, and the Supreme Court (SC) may take the matter up for consideration. The convicted were immediately released as a result of the Gujarat government's amnesty policy, and prominent lawyers Kapil Sibal and Aparna Bhat described the circumstances to the Supreme Court. 'We are simply challenging the remission; we are not disputing the Supreme Court's ruling. The Supreme Court's ruling is acceptable. We are questioning the principles on which remission was granted,' Sibal stated. Because of this, a bench presided over by Chief Justice Justice NV Ramana decided to schedule a hearing for the petition.
