In a recent landmark decision, the Supreme Court noted that marriage and relationship breakdown are not prohibited by the law. The decision is a huge relief for the women who had their requests for abortions denied because they had left their husbands. The first 20 weeks of pregnancy are permissible for abortion under the medical termination of pregnancy Act. Women who have experienced r*pe, whose marital status has changed, or who are mentally ill may abort up to 24 weeks. Women who are single are now also permitted. Unmarried women will now be able to get healthcare services without having to go through the legal process.
