Number of Vehicles in Telangana Rises Sharply Over a Decade
The number of registered vehicles in Telangana has increased significantly over the past decade. According to official data, there were 71.52 lakh (7.15 million) vehicles in the state as of June 2, 2014, when Telangana was formed. Over the past ten years, this figure has risen by 2.5 times, with an additional one crore (10 million) vehicles hitting the roads. This means that, on average, 10 lakh (1 million) new vehicles have been added annually over the last decade. The total number of vehicles in Telangana now stands at 1.72 crore (17.2 million).
The rise in vehicle ownership is attributed to the easy availability of loans from banks and private financing firms. Many employees, particularly those in entry-level jobs, are opting for monthly installment plans to purchase vehicles as soon as they start working. Additionally, the middle-class population is showing increasing interest in buying not just two-wheelers but also cars.
Government transport department officials indicate that, on average, one in every two individuals in the state owns a vehicle.
Among Telangana districts, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, and Medchal account for the highest number of registered vehicles, totaling 82.45 lakh (8.25 million)—nearly 50% of all vehicles in the state.
On the other hand, the districts with the lowest number of registered vehicles include Mulugu (53,430), Bhupalpally (80,010), and Asifabad (88,768).
