Jamili Bill Introduced in Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Modi’s Government

The highly anticipated Jamili Elections Bill has been introduced in the Indian Parliament, sparking intense political discussions across the country. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal tabled the bill in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The bill, aimed at conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, has been proposed as the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill by the central government.

Opposition parties strongly opposed the bill. Congress MP Manish Tewari and Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav launched sharp criticisms. Manish Tewari argued that the proposed bill exceeds the legislative competence of the Lok Sabha and demanded its immediate withdrawal. Dharmendra Yadav claimed that the bill exemplifies authoritarian tendencies.

Several opposition parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, DMK, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and Shiv Sena (UBT), voiced fierce objections. They demanded that the bill be referred to a parliamentary committee for detailed examination. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi stated that the bill undermines voting rights and urged that it be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further scrutiny.

However, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), an NDA ally, supported the “One Nation, One Election” bill, agreeing with the proposal to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
