Two Gandhi Hospital nurses suspended for administering outdated injections to kids

Hyderabad, March.26: Responding to a report in the media today that four children of Bansilalpet area were administered outdated injections leading to their condition becoming serious with vomiting and sweating, Health Minister Dr C Lakshma Reddy today directed Director of Medical Education Dr Ramani to visit Gandhi Hospital and inquire into the issue and take immediate action against the delinquents.

As per the Minister’s directive, Dr Ramani visited Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad and inspected some wards and inquired about the health of children, who suffered problem of vomiting after giving injections. The DME suspended two staff nurses -- Shobha and Sunitha --- for administering outdated injections to the kids negligently and issued a memo to junior doctor Navin Singh for the malpractice. It is learnt that four children were admitted to the hospital last week and they were given injections on Saturday evening leading to their condition becoming serious. When their parents rushed to the doctors, they treated the kids immediately.

Later, Ramani said they were not using outdated medicines or injections in the hospital. However, she made it clear that some outsiders brought the outdated medicines into the hospital that led to complications on use. The State government did not supply outdated medicines, she said, adding that steps will be taken against such incidents. Some people brought such medicines into the hospital to malign the image by distorting the services being offered, she said. “We have ordered an inquiry with a two-member expert committee into the episode and will take further action on receiving a report in two days”, Ramani said. “The children are doing well now and we will allow only one attendant with the patient”.

It may be mentioned here that four children of Bansilalpet suffered complications of vomiting and sweating after outside injections were administered. On bringing it to the notice by the angst parents, doctors further treated them to overcome the problem and the children are now out of danger.
