35 American pirates get 5 years RI
Thirty-five sailors in the US ship, Seaman Guard Ohio, have been sentenced to 5 years Rigorous Imprisonment for piracy and entering into the Indian waters illegally off Tuticorin.
The pirate ship made a forced entry into the Indian waters on October 12, 2013. Following investigations into the cargo, it was found that the ship was carrying large amounts of weapons and ammunition.
The sailors were taken into custody.
A court in New Delhi, which dealt with the case, on Monday sentenced the sailors to 5 years RI.
The well-armed sailors have given no reasons for their illegal entry into the Indian waters. However, at that time, the US was flying its dreaded bombers 100 km off Tuticorin to ostensibly browbeat India on the Kudankulam atomic power plant built with Russian technology. There was also a protest campaign by an American-trained NGO at that time against the atomic power plant.
