On February 24th, the iconic trams of Kolkata completed 150 years, marking a significant milestone for the city's heritage. The tram services in Kolkata were first introduced in 1873 with horse-drawn carriages, and later upgraded to steam engines in 1882, and electric trams in 1900. In 2013, air-conditioned trams were added to the fleet. While there were once 25 tram routes in operation, only two remain in use today. To celebrate this important anniversary, officials held celebrations to recognize the tram's contribution to the city's transportation and history. The tram has been a source of pride for Bengal officials and continues to be a cherished part of Kolkata's culture. The West Bengal Transport Minister, Snehshish Chakraborty, emphasized the importance of keeping the tram services running indefinitely. Introduced to India by the British Raj, the tram has become an integral part of Kolkata's identity. In addition to its historical significance, the tram remains the most affordable and environmentally-friendly mode of transportation
