The Kerala Legislative Assembly has agreed to request the Central Government to officially change the state's name from "Kerala" to "Keralam". Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led this effort. The proposal asks that the new name be used in all official languages listed in the Constitution's Eighth Schedule. The opposition, led by Congress's UDF, also supported this change. The Speaker has given the resolution a green light. Notably, in the Malayalam language, the state is already called Keralam. The state government now wants the name to be consistent in other languages too.
