The political crisis in the UK has reemerged in the wake of Prime Minister Liz Truss' abrupt resignation. In order to qualify for Monday's vote, Rishi Sunak is thought to have become the first Conservative leadership contender to win the support of 100 MPs. The former chancellor's supporters claimed on Friday night that he had gathered the required number of votes well in advance of the deadline. The Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt was the first to formally declare her candidacy to succeed Liz Truss as Prime Minister, while Boris Johnson lagged behind. Unless one withdraws, two candidates will be put up to the Tory membership for voting on Monday, October 24, and the results will be made public on Friday (October 28). If Sunak's opponents are unable to secure 100 nominations from their fellow Tory MPs, Sunak will automatically become the party leader and prime minister.
