With 88 votes, Rishi Sunak defeated Penny Mordaunt (67 votes) and Truss Liz (50 votes) in the round 1 of voting to select Boris Johnson's replacement as the head of the Conservative Party and the UK Prime Minister. Two candidates have been eliminated. Nadhim Zahawi, the recently appointed chancellor, and Jeremy Hunt, a former Cabinet minister, are no longer in the running after failing to garner the support of at least 30 MPs. Attorney General Suella Braverman, a member of Parliament with Indian ancestry, is also in the race. Although the field is still considered to be wide open, the race appears to be settling into a Sunak, Mordaunt, and Liz Truss three-way fight at this early stage of the competition. On Thursday, Conservative members of Parliament will cast their next vote to select their preferred candidates still on the ballot.
