Pakistan's Name on Team India's Jerseys... Here's What ICC Said!
A new controversy has surfaced ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to take place in Pakistan and Dubai starting February 19. Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has objected to displaying the name of the host country, Pakistan, on Team India’s jerseys.
Traditionally, ICC tournaments require the name and logo of the host country to be printed on the participating teams’ jerseys. However, the BCCI has reportedly argued that since the Indian team will be playing in Dubai, they will not print Pakistan’s name on their jerseys.
Responding to the issue, the ICC stated that all teams are obligated to follow the tournament regulations. “It is the responsibility of every team to display the tournament logo on their kits. All teams must adhere to this rule,” an ICC official was quoted as saying by A-Sports.
The apex board also warned that strict action could be taken against Team India if their players’ kits fail to feature the Champions Trophy logo and the host country’s name, as stipulated in ICC regulations. According to these rules, the host nation’s name must be displayed on the jerseys regardless of the location of the matches.
This controversy comes amid ongoing tensions between the BCCI and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Over the past few months, the BCCI initially refused to send its team to Pakistan for the tournament. A compromise was eventually reached, leading to the adoption of a hybrid model, wherein some matches will be held in Dubai.
However, in future ICC tournaments hosted by India, Pakistan is unlikely to play in India and is expected to insist on neutral venues. The BCCI may also have to bear additional costs as part of this arrangement.
