BCCI to Review India’s Heavy Defeat in Border-Gavaskar Trophy: What’s Next?
Despite the dismal performance by key players, it is reported that no major actions will be taken against senior cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who struggled throughout the series. Additionally, head coach Gautam Gambhir is also expected to retain his position. A senior BCCI official stated, “There will be a review, but no one will be sacked. We cannot remove the coach solely due to poor batting performances. Gautam Gambhir will continue as the coach.”
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have been pivotal in India’s top order over the past decade, failed to deliver in this crucial series. Both players were instrumental in India’s success during last year’s T20 World Cup. However, in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, their performance fell short of expectations. Virat Kohli managed a century in the first Test in Perth, but he couldn’t contribute significantly in the subsequent matches. Rohit Sharma’s form was even more concerning, scoring just 31 runs across five innings. Consequently, he was dropped for the final Test in Sydney.
Despite their recent poor form, the BCCI has indicated that both players will be part of the squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. Moreover, they are likely to be included in the five-match Test series against England scheduled for June. “Rohit and Virat will be selected for the Champions Trophy, and they will also feature in the England Test series,” a senior BCCI official added.
