Polavaram project: 48 radial gates lifted at a time, discharged 15 lakh cusecs of water

Andhra Pradesh, July 13: With heavy inflows from the upper reaches of the Godavari river, 15 lakh cusecs of water was discharged at Polavaram project by lifting 48 radial gates at a time through the world’s largest spillway.
 
Polavaram which is still under construction has received huge flood water in the first season after fixing radial gates. Lifting of gates for the first time with hydraulic technology was successful, according to officials of the Water Resources Department. 
 
Radial gates were installed on priority basis expecting huge inflows in rainy season. This time, Godavari river at Polavaram received record inflows in 100 years.
 
Completion of project, which was accorded national status, likely by 2023. However, Resettlement and Rehabilitation package to nearly one lakh displaced families not yet over.
