Veteran Filmmaker Bharathiraja Passes Away at 84 in Chennai
Legendary Tamil film director, actor, and screenwriter Bharathiraja, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Indian cinema for his authentic portrayal of rural life, breathed his last on Wednesday. He was 84.

The veteran filmmaker, who had been battling severe health issues for the past year, passed away at his residence in Chennai. His health had significantly deteriorated following the sudden death of his son, actor Manoj Bharathiraja (48), who succumbed to a heart attack in March 2025. The grief deeply affected Bharathiraja, leading to increased mental stress and respiratory complications that required multiple hospitalizations.

Born on July 17, 1941, in Allinagaram village near Theni in Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja’s real name was Chinnasamy. He made his directorial debut in 1977 with the landmark film 16 Vayathinile, which starred Sridevi and Rajinikanth. The movie’s realistic depiction of village life revolutionized Tamil cinema and established a new wave of storytelling focused on rural India. It was later remade in Telugu as Padaharella Vayasu, achieving massive success.

Over a career spanning five decades, Bharathiraja directed nearly 40 films. His notable works, including Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Mudhal Mariyathai, and Vedam Pudhithu, are celebrated for sensitively exploring caste systems, rural struggles, and human relationships.

In Telugu cinema, films like Seethakokachiluka (which won the National Award for Best Telugu Film), Aaradhana, and Jamadagni became classics. He also provided the story for the superhit Mangamma Gari Manavadu and the screenplay for Palnati Pourusham.

Apart from direction, Bharathiraja made a mark as an actor and producer. He introduced several prominent actors, including Karthik and Revathi, to the film industry.

The veteran has been honored with six National Film Awards and received the prestigious Padma Shri in 2004 for his contributions to Indian cinema. He was affectionately called the “Miracle Director” by his fans.

The passing of Bharathiraja has sent shockwaves across the Tamil and pan-Indian film fraternity. Tributes are pouring in from cinema personalities and political leaders. Details regarding his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced shortly.
