Corona Resurgence in the Country: Rising Cases in Multiple States
Concerns are mounting as COVID-19 cases are once again increasing across several Indian states. Health departments in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat have intensified monitoring and preventive measures in response to the gradual rise in the number of infections. Officials have clarified that all currently reported cases are exhibiting only mild symptoms and that no deaths have occurred so far. Nonetheless, metropolitan areas such as Mumbai, Chennai, and Ahmedabad are witnessing a noticeable surge in case numbers.

According to data released by the Maharashtra Health Department, Mumbai alone has reported 95 new COVID-19 cases in the month of May. These account for the majority of the 106 cases recorded across the entire state since January. Currently, 16 individuals are undergoing treatment in hospitals. Many patients have been shifted from KEM Hospital to Seven Hills Hospital to help contain the spread of the virus. Authorities stated that COVID-19 testing is being conducted for all patients displaying symptoms of influenza or severe respiratory infections.

In Pune, although there are currently no active COVID-19 cases in government hospitals, precautionary measures have been taken by preparing 50 beds at Naidu Hospital. Dr. Neena Borade, Chief of the Health Department at Pune Municipal Corporation, reported that an 87-year-old woman from the Manjari area had contracted COVID-19 in May and has since made a full recovery. She noted that civic hospitals in the city are not currently conducting tests and are awaiting new guidelines from the central government.

In Tamil Nadu, COVID-19 cases are also on the rise. Puducherry has reported 12 new cases. Medical professionals in Chennai have indicated that fevers previously attributed to influenza are now increasingly being diagnosed as COVID-19. Due to the risk of infection, several hospitals have postponed critical surgeries such as organ transplants and heart operations.

Karnataka’s Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao confirmed that there are currently 16 active COVID-19 cases in the state. In Gujarat, the city of Ahmedabad reported seven new COVID-19 cases in a single day. This marks a significant rise in contrast to the city’s previous trend of recording only one case per month over the past year. Officials stated that all affected individuals are in home isolation, and their samples have been sent for genomic sequencing.
