 Justice B.R. Gavai to Be the Next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

Justice B.R. Gavai is set to assume charge as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. His name has been recommended for the position by the current Chief Justice of India (CJI), Justice Sanjiv Khanna, to the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s tenure will conclude on May 13. The following day, on May 14, Justice B.R. Gavai is scheduled to take the oath as the new Chief Justice of India. Justice Gavai is expected to serve in the role for six months, with his retirement slated for November.

Justice B.R. Gavai will be the second Dalit judge to occupy the position of Chief Justice of India, following K.G. Balakrishnan. He hails from Amravati in Maharashtra. During his judicial career, he worked alongside Raja Bhonsale while serving as a judge of the Maharashtra High Court.

Between 1987 and 1990, he practiced as an advocate in the Bombay High Court. In 2000, he was appointed as a Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor. He assumed the role of Additional Judge of the High Court in 2003, and was promoted to a permanent judge in 2005. Justice Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.
