U.S. Immigration Tightens Rules for Green Card and Visa Holders

Indian immigrants settled in the United States are reportedly facing new difficulties despite holding Green Cards. Many Green Card holders have complained of undergoing prolonged questioning at airports under the pretext of security checks, with some being held for several hours. These developments are believed to have intensified after Donald Trump assumed office, with his administration implementing stricter immigration laws. Immigration officials have reportedly increased scrutiny as part of efforts to identify and deport individuals residing in the U.S. illegally.

A statement by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has caused concern among the Indian diaspora in America. Vance stated that possessing a Green Card does not guarantee permanent residency in the United States and that the government retains the authority to decide who is permitted to remain in the country.

Reports suggest that immigration officials have been conducting lengthy inspections, particularly for individuals returning to the U.S. after staying abroad for more than six months. Legal experts handling immigration matters have advised Green Card holders, H-1B visa holders, and F-1 visa students to remain vigilant and prepared.

Immigration attorneys have recommended that individuals carry official identification documents issued by the U.S. government at all times. They advised Green Card holders to renew their cards before expiration and suggested that H-1B visa holders carry their most recent pay slips. Similarly, F-1 visa students have been advised to keep official documentation from their college or university confirming the duration of their course.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has also issued an advisory to Indian Americans, H-1B visa holders, and F-1 visa holders, warning that additional inspections are unavoidable due to changes in immigration laws. The advisory urged individuals to remain patient even if the questioning lasts for several hours.
