266 Kg of gold missing from Anantapadmanabha Swamy temple chest

New Delhi, Feb 15, 2015: The famous Padmanabha Swamy temple at Tiruvananthapuram, which hit the headlines in 2011 for reportedly owning gold treasure worth Rs. 1 lakh crores, is in the news again. Auditor Vindo Rai, appointed by the Supreme Court to keep track of the temple's gold reserves, has submitted to the apex court in a report that 266 kilograms of gold jewelry of the temple has gone missing. The auditor told the court that 893 kilograms of gold was taken out from the temple's underground chests for various festivals and rituals of the famed temple but only only 627 kilograms of gold was returned to its chests. The apex court of the country is now expected to order a probe to find out how 266 kilograms of gold went missing and the persons responsible for its disappearance.
