APSRTC to levy Safety Cess for raising insurance cover
The APSRTC is going to levy Re 1 Safety Cess as accident cover in its buses. Since daily some 60 lakh people travel by APSRTC buses, the Rs 60 lakh so gained would be accrued and insurance firms tapped in such a way that adequate compensation could be given in case of bus accidents. Some 80 people die annually while traveling in APSRTC buses. It would now be ensured that in each case of death the bereaved family would get Rs 10 lakh. The Safety Cess would be across the board in all buses from Palle Velugu to Amaravati. The Corporation has come up with the idea so that in case of accidents, the insurance cover will take care of the resultant loss. After the levy of the cess, the Chandrababu government would negotiate with the insurance companies about the insurance cover.
