HCU lull ends as leftist students go on the rampage; VC Apparao gheraoed

Hyderabad Central University that has been quiet following the tension over the suicide by research scholar Rohith Vemula erupted once again on Tuesday with the return of Vice-Chancellor Apparao following his leave. The Vice-Chancellor's arrival was greeted with violence by the students who went on the rampage, destroying furniture in Apparao's guest house and elsewhere. The Vice-Chancellor was gheroaed and locked up in the guest house. The students were agitated over Apparao's taking over charge from the acting VC Periaswamy, without informing them. Owing to the violence, newsmen reached the area, only to be attacked by the students. The mediamen saw two students with bleeding injuries on the HCU campus. Another student was floored with a leg injury. The agitated students alleged that as the Vice-Chancellor returned, the students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and Rashtriya Swayamsevbak Sangh went into a meeting with the likeminded teachers. This was the trigger for the leftist students to go on the rampage, attacking their presumed opponents and destroying furniture. They also feigned that they were attacked by the ABVP-RSS group. They further indulged in stone-throwing. As usual, they held the Vice-Chancellor responsible for all the happenings in the university.
