KV Chowdhary appointment as CVC challenged

The appointment of the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, K.V. Chowdhary, has been challenged by NGO Common Cause in the Supreme Court. Its counsel, Ram Jethmalani, told the court that a person who should have been in the jail has been appointed as the CVC by the Narendra Modi government. When the court headed by Chief Justice T.S. Thakur remarked that learned counsel is known to bring those who have been jailed freed, now was he trying to put someone in jail. Senior counsel replied `No, that is not the case.' The court then told the counsel that the bench would take up hearing on March 29. KV Chowdary is a 1978 batch IRS officer. Born in Machilipatnam, he studied there before becoming the Probationary Officer in the Andhra Bank. He was a member of the Indian delegation to the OECD in Paris in 2004. He was also a member of the team appointed by the Union Finance Minister to redraft the Income-tax Act. Widely traveled, he was a member of many Central committees over taxation, pricing and vigilance.
