In a recent development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive stating that universities are no longer permitted to display students' Aadhaar numbers on their academic degrees or provisional certificates. This decision comes in response to concerns raised by various reports suggesting that state governments might consider imprinting these Aadhaar numbers on university documents. The intention behind this was to facilitate future verification during job applications or college admissions. Manish Joshi, the Secretary of UGC, has conveyed a clear message to universities. He emphasized that sharing or revealing Aadhaar numbers in public view is strictly prohibited unless they are appropriately concealed or masked. This measure is essential to safeguard students' privacy and prevent any misuse of their personal information. Furthermore, Joshi urged universities to strictly adhere to the guidelines established by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
