Chennai: Terrifying moments unfolded for passengers on a Mumbai-bound train departing from Chennai Central, as thick smoke suddenly engulfed the train, leading to a chaotic scene where people jumped off in panic. The incident occurred near Basin Bridge shortly after the train (12164) had commenced its journey towards Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Mumbai. In a swift response, the train's vigilant loco pilot brought the train to an immediate halt, while efforts were made to address the situation. The Railway authorities clarified that the smoke emission resulted from water ingress in the HOG (Head on Generation) coupler, assuring that there was no fire involved. With the safety of passengers as the utmost priority, prompt actions were taken to contain the smoke by disconnecting the HOG connector. Once the situation was under control, passengers were able to safely exit the train and seek refuge. After successfully resolving the issue, the train resumed its journey without any further technical complications.
