Iranian authorities have started to install cameras in public places to identify women who are not wearing hijabs. Those identified will receive a warning text message about the consequences of their actions. The police said this would help prevent resistance against the hijab law. The death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who was arrested for allegedly violating the hijab rule and died in police custody, sparked protests last year. Since then, more women have been discarding their veils, especially in larger cities. The police have stated that the system uses smart cameras and other tools to identify and send warning messages to those violating the hijab law. Women have been legally required to wear the hijab since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and those who violate the law face fines or arrest.
