The Supreme Court halted a ruling by the Andhra Pradesh High Court ordering the state government to transform Amaravati into the capital city within six months, stating that judges cannot act as urban planners. The Andhra Pradesh High Court's decision on March 3 to base the state's legislature, administrative branch, and judiciary in Amaravati put an end to proposals by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy to establish three capital cities. The state government was mandated by the High Court to finish Amaravati's development within six months. A group of 63 writ petitions brought by displeased farmers in the Amaravati region challenging the decision of the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government to designate Visakhapatnam as the Executive Capital, Kurnool as the Judiciary Capital, and Amaravati as the Legislative Capital of Andhra Pradesh were heard by the high court, which issued a 300-page ruling.
