Majority of Americans Want Limits on Trump's Presidential Powers
United States President Donald Trump's popularity is on the decline, with his approval ratings falling to a notable low since assuming office. According to the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, only 42 percent of Americans support Donald Trump's administrative policies. This is a drop from 43 percent recorded three weeks ago, and significantly lower than the 47 percent approval he received on January 20, the day he took office.
The poll indicates a growing perception among Americans that Donald Trump is abusing his presidential powers. In the early days of his presidency, he signed several executive orders, not only targeting federal departments but also aimed at tightening his grip over institutions like universities. A majority of respondents in the survey believe these actions demonstrate an overreach of presidential authority.
The findings also show that most Americans believe the president’s powers should be kept in check. An overwhelming 83 percent of respondents opined that even if the president disagrees with federal court rulings, he must still respect and follow the law.
The survey covered a total of 4,306 participants.
Additionally, 57 percent of respondents opposed Donald Trump's proposal to cut funding to universities solely because he disagreed with their functioning. Notably, one-third of those opposed were Republicans. Despite Donald Trump’s allegations that colleges are failing to combat anti-Semitism on campuses, a large portion of the American public does not see this as a valid reason to withdraw funding. In fact, 66 percent of those surveyed expressed that the president should not have unchecked control over key institutions.
The poll further revealed public dissatisfaction with Donald Trump's handling of several critical issues, including immigration, inflation, taxes, and the rule of law. Even on immigration—an area traditionally considered one of Donald Trump's strongholds—public support was divided, with 45 percent in approval and 46 percent in opposition.
Although Donald Trump's current approval ratings still outperform those from several periods during former President Barack Obama’s tenure, the latest statistics reflect increasing public concern over Trump’s recent actions.
