Mivi Targets Indigenous Smartphone Design, Plans Major Expansion in India
Indian consumer electronics brand Mivi is stepping up its ambitions in the smartphone market, with plans to develop indigenous product designs, proprietary technology and intellectual property (IP). Moving beyond conventional electronics assembly, the company aims to strengthen its engineering capabilities and establish itself as a globally competitive technology brand.

Mivi Chief Business Officer Himanshu Tandon outlined the company's strategy during a discussion with technology research firm Techarc. Himanshu Tandon said India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem has expanded significantly in recent years, supported by government initiatives and domestic manufacturing companies. However, Indian brands must now move beyond assembling products designed elsewhere and invest in original technology development.

The company intends to build expertise in electronic circuit design, printed circuit boards (PCBs), industrial product design and software engineering. These capabilities are expected to help Mivi exercise greater control over product development while reducing its dependence on external design expertise.

Founded by Midhula Devabhaktuni and Viswanadh Kandula, Mivi established its presence in India's consumer electronics market through wireless earbuds, headphones, speakers and soundbars. Its recent entry into smartphones marks a significant expansion into a highly competitive segment dominated by established international brands.

Mivi launched its first smartphone, the Mivi One 5G, on September 24, 2026. Although the handset is manufactured in India, the company's longer-term objective is to develop smartphones incorporating greater indigenous engineering and company-owned intellectual property. Mivi has indicated that it aims to achieve meaningful progress towards an indigenously designed smartphone within approximately 12 months.

The company is also targeting a workforce of around 10,000 employees over the next three years. The proposed expansion would support its growing engineering, product development, manufacturing and business operations. However, Mivi has not disclosed a detailed recruitment schedule.

Artificial intelligence forms another part of its technology strategy. Himanshu Tandon said the company is exploring partnerships with AI developers to integrate intelligent features into future smartphones and other consumer devices. Specific partnerships and implementation timelines have not yet been announced.

Meanwhile, the Mivi One 5G is entering the market through Flipkart's Big Billion Days sale. Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, the smartphone features a 6,000mAh battery, 18W charging, a 50-megapixel primary rear camera and Android 16.
Under promotional offers announced on October 7, the handset's effective prices start at ₹11,999 for the 4GB RAM variant, ₹13,499 for the 6GB model and ₹14,999 for the 8GB version, subject to applicable payment offers.

Mivi also plans to expand its offline distribution through national and regional retail chains and additional experience centres in 2027. The company says its customers have access to more than 500 service centres across India.

The expansion reflects Mivi's ambition to evolve from an audio accessories manufacturer into a broader consumer technology company. Its success will depend on translating these plans into competitive products backed by sustained engineering investment, reliable after-sales support and commercially valuable indigenous intellectual property.
