Sri Lankan Star Cricketer Angelo Mathews Announces Retirement from Test Cricket
Sri Lankan cricket team’s senior player and former captain Angelo Mathews has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. Mathews stated that he has decided to end his journey in the longest format of the game, with his final Test set to be against Bangladesh, starting on June 17 in Galle.
Speaking on this decision, Angelo Mathews said, “I have decided to retire from Test cricket after the first Test against Bangladesh in June. I have already informed the selectors about my decision. However, I will remain available for selection in white-ball formats such as ODIs and T20s based on the team’s requirements.”
Angelo Mathews expressed confidence in the current Sri Lankan Test squad, stating that many talented young players are emerging, and he believes some of them will grow into great cricketers in the future. “I made this decision with the intention of creating an opportunity for another young and talented cricketer,” he explained.
Reflecting on his career, Mathews remarked that it has been a rare honour to represent Sri Lanka for the past 17 years. “I express my heartfelt gratitude to Sri Lanka Cricket Board, my fellow players, and fans who have supported me throughout my career,” Angelo Mathews stated in an official announcement.
Over his Test career, Angelo Mathews played 118 matches for Sri Lanka, scoring 8,167 runs at an average of 44. He also took 33 wickets as a bowler. Mathews made his Test debut against Australia in 2009 and captained the Sri Lankan team in 34 Test matches. His most recent international appearance was during the T20 World Cup 2024, in a match against the Netherlands.
