Shreyas Iyer Creates History in IPL with a Unique Captaincy Record
Indian Premier League (IPL) star and current Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has etched his name into the record books by achieving a rare and remarkable feat. He became the first captain in IPL history to lead three different franchises into the playoffs.

On Sunday, Shreyas Iyer guided Punjab Kings to a crucial victory against Rajasthan Royals, thereby securing a place in the IPL 2025 playoffs for the team. With this achievement, Iyer has become the only captain to take three separate franchises into the knockout stages of the tournament.

Previously, Shreyas Iyer captained Delhi Capitals during the 2019 and 2020 seasons and led them to the playoffs on both occasions. In the 2024 season, he took charge of Kolkata Knight Riders and successfully steered them into the knockout round. Continuing this leadership streak, he assumed captaincy responsibilities for Punjab Kings in the 2025 season and once again led the team to the playoffs.

Navigating the challenges of a highly competitive league like the IPL—each franchise with its own team dynamics and strategies—Shreyas Iyer has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities. His ability to adapt, inspire his teammates, and maintain consistency across different teams highlights the strength of his captaincy.

While several players have captained three different IPL franchises over the years, Shreyas Iyer is the first to guide all three to the playoffs, a testament to his strategic acumen and influential leadership.
